IN THE STREETS OF EAST LA
In the streets of East LA
our people sing songs and dance all the night
as if holocaust and genocide has never happened to us.
In the streets of East LA
mothers are weeping for sons rotting in prison,
sons who were killed in the gang wars or the oil wars of U.S. of A.
In the streets of East LA
where I was raised to be a good Catholic ignorant boy
and to live a happy mestizo life, a slave mentality.
In the streets of East LA
I grew up confused and miseducated, and lost
about the history and identity of my people.
In the streets of East LA
today there are gangsters and paleteros,
Metal music teenagers and viejos cholos, all disgraced.
In the streets of East LA
years ago I saw our people rise August 29, 1970
and they said no to what we then called Gringos.
In the streets of East LA
all those who left the battlefields against colonialism, who graduated
with PhD's in Selling Out, are now married to Gringos and Gringas.
In the streets of East LA
over time I saw heroes turn into vile vendidos,
and hope turn into despair and treason.
In the lands of Cemanahuac, this continent, our lands,
I have learned that it is not Gringos
that are the problem, but that it is all Europeans who shit on us.
In the lands of Cemanahuac, this continent, our lands,
it was the Spaniards and the English who annihilated 95% of us
in their evil wanting of our land's wealth, and in an attempt to exterminate us.
In the lands of Cemanahuac, this continent, our lands,
I have matured and learned to say no to Hispanic
and Latino, and even the mestizo Chicano identity, and yes to Nican Tlaca.
In the lands of Cemanahuac, this continent, our lands,
I have raised myself to knowledge and learned that only Nican Tlaca nationalism,
our Indigenous history and identity, is the only path that leads us to liberation.
our Indigenous history and identity, is the only path that leads us to liberation.
In the lands of Cemanahuac, this continent, our lands,
we are slaves and fools and cowards
all across our continent, in drugs and gangs and church.
In our people of the future, liberated and with honor,
I can see our people no longer obsessed with sports and music
and totally in love with knowledge and warrior duties.
In our people of the future, liberated and with honor,
they will look back at these times in shame but they will use
our 500 years of slavery and dishonor as a reminder of the evil of Europeans.
In our people of the future, liberated and with honor,
they will teach their children that knowledge and courage
and discipline as warriors are the only ways to keep a people free.
