Beautiful baby,
don’t know if you are a boy or a girl

I am working and struggling
and educating our people
so that your grandchildren
will not be born into poverty,
into ignorance,
into disgrace.
Beautiful baby,
I see this picture of you
beautiful now.
But the years and the ugliness
that is in the world
will take away from your beauty.
That makes me cry
as I write these words.
Beautiful baby,
baby of all of us.
Beautiful baby
you are the hope
of all of us.
Beautiful baby,
we are working
to make all of our people
free from disgrace.
Beautiful baby,
I live my life in struggle,
learning and teaching,
as a scholar warrior
to educate our people,
to liberate our people,
so that your grandchildren
will be free
from ignorance,
from poverty,
from the occupation of our lands,
of our continent by the Europeans.
We are working as scholar warriors
to free our people
from the disgrace that we now live in,
from the slave lives we now live in.
Beautiful baby,
I think of you
every time
I think I am tired of this work
of education for liberation.
I think of you and I a new again.
I have this picture of you
to remind me
why I do
what I do.
